Balboa Island is actually three islands which sit in the Newport Harbor. These islands are some of the most expensive real estate in the Newport Beach area. Yet prior to 1908 this was nothing more then a sandbar. Development began in 1908-1909 with the dredging of Newport Harbor and the building of the Balboa Island, Collins Island to the northwest, and Little Balboa island to the east.  By 1916, the islands became part of Newport Beach.
